Darren McGann and Janet Morris, 2041 IAE 2011 Members

In June, two 2041 IAE Alumni Members Darren McGann and Janet Morris reunited at the Corporate Eco Forum Gala in Washington D.C. “The annual meeting assembles an elite group of senior executives from 18 industries to share insights, collaborate, and innovate” as explained by EcoForum. Janet had won her place to attend the 2041 IAE 2011 Expedition after promising not to buy any new products for a year. She took the stage to tell her inspiring journey after an incredible introduction done by Corporate Eco Forum Founder’s twelve year old daughter, Anjali Rangaswami.

Rob meets Alumni at Sony HQ

“Great to meet up with Rob again - he cycled 3 hours to join us at Sony HQ in Weybridge Surrey and was as always in "positive attack " mode. We hope our discussions with Sony lead to them offering camera equipment for Rob's adventures over the next 3 years including 'The Return' in 2013. We also met up with Rob Copsey , the rehab coordinator of BLESMA , a charity supporting service personnel injured in action and their families. Hopefully from this will come a candidate to go on IAE 2012 to Antarctica. A very productive day.” -Andy Cook

Rob speaks at the Majid Society in Saudi Arabia

On June 5th Rob made his way to Saudi Arabia to do a lecture for the Majid Society, “Strengthening Sustainability through Building Partnerships” at the second Societal Development Forum 2011. While there he was included as a speaker on the discussion panel with the Clinton Initiative and Gates Foundation.

Robert Swan in Singapore at the Vitol Industry Speaker Series

This past May, Robert Swan made his journey to Singapore where he spoke at The Vitol Industry Speaker Series to raise awareness of the 2041 movement. Over 400 people attended the talk held in Singapore, with backgrounds ranging from government officials, business leaders and students. He had a chance to meet up with recent 2041 IAE 2011 Team Member Spencer Yong where they joined on stage to share their individual Antarctica experience as well as spread the message of the importance for young leaders to step up to make changes, and be the role model to champion the cause of sustainability in our everyday lives.

Think Global, Act Local with Rob in Mumbai

Robert Swan with Nayantara & Siddharth Piramal

Robert is currently in the city of Mumbai and in process of putting together a few elements for his Voyage for Cleaner Energy India Expedition which he will be undertaking later this year,at the end of 2011. As a major supporter for 2041’s Campaign in India, Harsh and Reshma Piramal of The Ashok Piramal Business Group have been helping him understand and approach the local issues pertaining to Climate change in India. Such issues include the preservation of the tiger and water scarcity.

Seen in the picture along with Robert is Harsh and Reshma’s daughter Nayantara, age 7 and their son, Siddharth, age 4. Both are doing their bit for the environment by putting up hand-drawn posters of ‘SAVE TREES’ and ‘SAVE WATER’ in their respective schools around Mumbai. In a developing country like India where more than 50% of the population is below 23 years of age, it is young leadership that is required to take up the environmental challenges for the future. Through Robert’s upcoming Expedition in India, he is keen to engage young people to take action on local issues plaguing the country with the motto of ‘THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL.’

Big Thanks to Harsh, his family and company for their continued support and commitment towards creating a positive impact in the environment and for their support towards 2041 in India.

Congratulations Team Aqua in the RC44

2041 would like to congratulate Team Aqua (GBR) on placing 2nd for the Austria Cup at Lake Traunsee.
Two months ago, Team Aqua took 3rd in San Diego, California before purchasing their new boat. On the Traunsee event, Chris Bake stated, “I think getting out there and sailing a new boat and having the consistency that we had was great. There were a few missed opportunities and that probably cost us first place but ORACLE Racing sailed unbelievably and they deserve the position they got. We got a good second and so I’m really happy, the team has done a phenomenal job pulling the boat together, the boat felt good, so now it’s just a matter of improving on that.”
The Tour now heads to Cagliari in Sardinia (29 June – 3 July)

2041 would like to wish Chris Bake and Team Aqua the best of luck at RC44 at Lake Traunsee, Austria. On May 10th through the 15th Team Aqua will race in their new boat for the first time. “Boat captain Nigel King has been working closely with RC 44 boat builders Pauger to make sure that the new boat is ready and raring to go by the time racing commences at the RC 44 Austria Cup on Lake Traunsee.” -Team Aqua

“Besides being one of the principal contenders of the Tour, Team Aqua uses its boat as a platform to promote an eco-friendly message. The team supports the World Land Trust and “2041”… Team Aqua offsets its carbon footprint and promotes sustainable development.”

SolarCycle Diaries

Through our partners at G24 Innovations, news came to us of a fascinating awareness-raising expedition called The SolarCycle Diaries. Setting off on the EU Solar Day, May 15, 2009, the team of three riders aims to cycle 12,000 miles across the globe, demonstrating and disseminating information about solar power and climate change solutions while raising money for SolarAid – the UK’s first solar energy charity for the developing world.

Their panniers pimped with custom solar panels and operating on little other than sweat, determination, vision, and pedal power, their low-impact journey exemplifies 2041’s philosophy of championing the power of ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things, and using the latest and greatest in renewable, clean technology and digital advances to share your message with the world.

Having already conquered North African deserts (their expedition also promotes the Desertec initiative) and their share of traveling set-backs (probably not much fun on the ground, but makes entertaining reading for armchair supporters), 2041 wishes the best to Susie, Jamie, and Iain.
